Our Approach
The firm's pro bono program is structured to deliver substantive, demanding work that draws on the same skills our lawyers apply to commercial matters. We are not interested in token engagement — the matters we accept require careful judgment and significant time, and we resource them accordingly.
Andrew & Hopkins lawyers and professional staff are encouraged and expected to participate in the pro bono program. Pro bono hours count fully toward the same productivity standards we apply to commercial matters, and the firm provides direct support — including senior supervision and budget — for accepted engagements.
Practice Areas
The firm's pro bono work clusters in several substantive areas where our lawyers can apply their expertise meaningfully:
- Immigration and asylum — representation in removal defense, asylum applications, and special immigrant juvenile petitions.
- Veterans' benefits — appellate work on denied benefits claims and discharge upgrade petitions.
- Civil rights and access to justice — amicus work, impact litigation in coordination with established public interest organizations.
- Nonprofit governance — counsel to community-based organizations on governance, regulatory, and operational matters.
- Criminal justice reform — post-conviction and clemency representation in coordination with established advocacy organizations.
Engagement
Pro bono engagements are coordinated by a dedicated firm committee that evaluates referrals, matches matters to lawyers with relevant expertise, and oversees ongoing quality. Referring organizations may reach the committee at probono@andrewandhopkins.com.
