Lathrop GPM has announced a strategic combination with HG Law that will significantly expand the firm's intellectual property capabilities across key U.S. and international markets. Effective January 1, 2027, the combination will add 27 attorneys and 23 patent agents to Lathrop GPM's existing platform, establishing new offices in New York and London while continuing the firm's growth in Silicon Valley. The transaction reflects a broader trend among U.S. law firms scaling their global IP practices in response to sustained client demand for cross-border patent and technology counsel.
Following the combination, the firm will continue to operate as Lathrop GPM, with approximately 370 attorneys and an anticipated $300 million in revenue. The expanded footprint is designed to enhance the firm's ability to serve innovators, technology companies, and multinational enterprises navigating increasingly complex global intellectual property landscapes. By adding depth in New York and establishing a London presence, the combined firm positions itself to advise clients on transatlantic patent portfolios, technology transactions, and coordinated enforcement strategies across major jurisdictions.
James Velema has been appointed as IP Practice Group Leader of the combined firm. In this role, Velema will guide the strategic direction of the expanded intellectual property practice, overseeing patent, trademark, and technology services delivered from offices spanning the United States and the United Kingdom. The leadership appointment reinforces the firm's commitment to integrating the two practices, aligning talent across jurisdictions, and providing clients with seamless counsel on matters ranging from patent prosecution and portfolio management to complex IP litigation and licensing.
The combination also strengthens Lathrop GPM's ability to support emerging technology sectors, where cross-border considerations, regulatory developments, and rapidly evolving industry standards demand coordinated legal strategies. Clients are expected to benefit from a broader bench of registered patent agents, deeper technical expertise, and expanded access to counsel in leading innovation hubs. As the combined firm prepares for its formal launch on January 1, 2027, it will continue to prioritize responsive, business-focused service across all core practice areas.
