Biography

Michael Hutson is a Partner at Andrew & Hopkins, advising individuals and institutions on matters at the intersection of criminal law, financial regulation, cybersecurity and privacy, and complex dispute resolution. Michael is engaged when the question is not which legal regime applies, but how to manage exposure when criminal, regulatory, and civil consequences all attach to the same set of facts.

His defense practice includes representation in grand jury proceedings, federal and state criminal matters, parallel regulatory inquiries, and civil litigation involving allegations of fraud, market manipulation, and unauthorized data access. Michael counsels companies on incident response, breach notification, and post-incident remediation, working in close partnership with technical forensics teams, internal security functions, and law enforcement liaisons. His advisory practice covers AML and Counter-Terrorism Financing program design, privacy program counseling, and the institutional governance questions that arise after a serious incident.

Michael is recognized for the steadiness he brings to high-pressure matters — the engagements in which a single misstatement to a regulator or the press can multiply exposure across forums. He is admitted in Massachusetts, New York, and the District of Columbia, and counsels clients in English and German.
